1. When Should You Start?
The best time to start potty training is during your dog’s puppy stage. It can usually begin around 8 weeks of age. But remember, adult dogs can also be potty trained with the right methods.
2. Create a Regular Schedule
Dogs love routine. Taking them outside at the same times every day helps regulate their body clock.
• First thing in the morning
• 15-20 minutes after meals
• After play or sleep take your dog outside at these times.
3. Designate the Right Area
If you live indoors, create a designated area for your dog. This could be a balcony, garden, or a corner of the house. For dogs that live outdoors, always make sure they relieve themselves in the same area. This helps them associate the scent with the location.
4. Rewards and Patience Are Key
Reward your dog immediately when it relieves itself in the right place. This reward can be a treat or a loving pat. Positive reinforcement is the most effective method for dogs.
❌ Do not punish: Do not scare your dog when it relieves itself in the wrong place. This only
creates timidity and stress.
5. Recognize the Signs
Your dog gives off certain signals when it needs to go:
• Circling in circles
• Sniffing behavior on the ground
• Suddenly heading toward the door
When you notice these signs, immediately guide them to the appropriate area.
6. Accept Accidents as Normal
Accidents will happen, especially with puppies. In this case, the important thing is to clean the area thoroughly. Choose enzyme-based products instead of ammonia-based cleaners, otherwise the smell will linger and your dog will repeat the behavior in the same spot.
7. Potty Training for Adult Dogs
The process may take a little longer for adult dogs adopted from shelters or those that have not been trained before. However, results will be achieved if the same methods are applied patiently.
